Sean stretched his legs, looking up into the bleachers. Clara should be here by now. He called her this morning and she sounded like she had her father convinced to come. The bleachers were already filling up and the game would be starting in about ten minutes.

He turned his attention to the other team. Just those colors of black and red made the other team seem dark and foreboding. He wasn’t looking forward to the battering that would be coming his way. A sharp whistle from the visitor’s bleachers caught his attention. He turned in time to see Clara’s father waving a red and white pennant at him. The object of his affection was walking next to him, giving him a little wave with the tips of her fingers.

He stood up and ran to the low fence in front of the bleachers. She said something to her father and then rushed down to Sean.

“Is that a forty-three on your pennant?” Sean asked, finding himself suddenly caught in the grasp of her blue eyes again.

“Sure is. We’re not here to see the game. We’re here to see you,” she said.

“What if I let you down?”

“Then we’ll rip off your number and just root for someone else,” she said with a laugh.

He reached down and hugged her over the fence. The coach was already hollering his name from the middle of the field.
